In my TTRPG A Night to Remember, I combined my interest in map-making games and regency romance to make a unique map-making experience. A Night to Remember offers the feel of watching a cheesy historical romance that offers drama, passion, and possibly even betrayal. Players will take on the role as all-seeing matchmakers at the fanciest ball of regency London’s social season, who work towards the goal of bringing together their favorite match, while potentially also sabotaging other players’ matches.
A Night to Remember was inspired by the Netflix series Bridgerton, the book series in which that Netflix series was adapted from by Julia Quinn, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Quiet Year by Avery Alder, and Navigator by Michael Klamerus. I loved the experience that the two map-making TTRPGs provided, and the creative liberty that they offer, where players can choose how they want the story to unfold as they go. For theming, I wanted something more lighthearted and silly than the themes offered in The Quiet Year and Navigator, so I went with the regency romance theme. I thought it would be interesting to limit the scope of a map-making game to a ballroom for a single night.
This game’s physical components include paper, writing and drawing utensils, a deck of playing cards, a set of dice, and some items to be used as tokens. What really makes this game come to life however, is players’ creativity as they create new situations for their characters to get into, and introduce new people and things in the ballroom for players to interact with. As a designer, I want to provide the best blueprint I can for players to have a fun experience and be able to express themselves in their play.
